Traditionally all maintenance work has been planned based on design life, but structural health monitoring provides the possibility to maintain based on condition instead of a concrete time schedule. If the change of bridge bearings can be pushed just a few years, it can save millions over a larger timespan.

In 2011 11 cracks were found in the Storstrøm bridge, which resulted in a total stop in train traffic on the bridge for weeks and stopped freight trains permanently from using the bridge. Once damage has occurred or has grown too much, closures can become a necessary consequence to ensure safety.

Structural health monitoring can help locate the damaged and weak areas before they become to severe to require closures. The Storestrøm bridge did not have structural health monitoring before the damage occurred, but it  helped monitor the conditions when the damage was located to ensure safety while the structure was repaired and operational to ensure the safety of passengers.
