Anode Ladders in Structural Health Monitoring

Anode ladders play a critical role in monitoring the progression of corrosion in concrete reinforcement. These devices are strategically installed at the time of concrete pouring. By measuring the electrical current in anodes across various depths of the concrete, it is possible to accurately estimate the depth of corrosion. This vital data allows engineers to predict the rate at which corrosion will reach the reinforcing steel, aiding in the timely maintenance and extension of the structure’s lifespan.

Anode ladders consist of a set of anodes placed in a row, such that the contraptions looks like a ladder with two structural fastening the anodes in each side. The design is to let the anodes be placed at very specific depts in the concrete allowing the installer to set them at different angles depending on the need of the project.

Measuring the current over the anode over time indicates if corrosion has started on the anode.

Why Measure at Different Depths?

The placement of anode ladders at varying depths is a strategic decision aimed at capturing the onset and progression of corrosion as it occurs within the concrete. Changes in the current of the anode ladders signal indicates the start of corrosion, enabling a comprehensive assessment of the threat. This multi-depth analysis helps in predicting how quickly corrosion will compromise all reinforcement layers and estimating the timeframe before significant intervention is required.

Partnership with Force Technology

In collaboration with our esteemed partners at Force Technology, we leverage advanced corrosion monitoring technologies. Force Technology has developed “CorroWatch,” a sensor system analogous to the anode ladder. CorroWatch utilizes electrodes placed at various depths relative to the reinforcement to monitor corrosion levels. The primary distinction lies in its compact design, which simplifies installation and enhances adaptability to different structural contexts.

Integration with Senmos

Our KI Data platform, Senmos, seamlessly integrates with CorroWatch sensors to capture and display real-time corrosion data. This integration facilitates effortless monitoring and management of structural health, offering unprecedented insights into the condition of concrete structures. Senmos’s robust data visualization capabilities ensure that all stakeholders can easily access and interpret corrosion data, streamlining decision-making processes.
